We need less space

I admit to being a total grammar nerd. Some people have never heard of this thing called grammar, and strangely enough, they often call it grammer. (Is there a grammest somewhere?) But I recently read in my Chicago Manual of Style's 16th Edition that it is correct to use only a single space after a period. Then I spied this article by someone on a rant about the issue, a potential soul mate to my OCD nature if I wasn't already married:
